It brings me great sadness to present this as we learn the news of the passing of Tom Petty today. It pains me to no end as I write this, understanding that you are literally one heartbeat away from eternity. Rest in Paradise Tom Petty, as you have given me in this world. A true legend, it was your music alone that got me through my lowest low. I am so heartbroken. I will cherish seeing you live in concert for the rest of my life.
On Sunday, September 17th, 2017 I was blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime. I was finally able to see and experience my favorite rock & roll band perform in living color. This band, of course, would be the incomparable: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.
The band was playing at the KAABOO Del Mar music festival. KAABOO is the brainchild of Bryan E. Gordon, who had the goal to fill the void left by San Diego Street Scene, the pioneering festival that started here in 1984 and thrived for decades, before going belly up in 2009 after mounting financial losses. How the heck did I get started listening to Tom Petty?
Well, you can blame MTV for that. I grew up throughout the entire 90s watching nothing but music videos on this one channel from sun up to sun down, and that is where I first met Mr. Petty. No one ever did it like him. No one. He gave you so much of himself, while still maintaining his signature poised restraint, you couldn't help but catch the contagious vibes of the sweet energy of his music. When I listened to him with my eyes and read his expertly carefully chosen words with my ears, I felt like I was finally free to uncover the righteous oddball living inside me.
My cousin Tyler knew Tom Petty personally, and when I saw him recently he started talking about how wonderful of a person Tom was, and how his music is so underrated, much to our confusion and frustration.
The sad news about Tom Petty is that he is no longer alive and rocking with us. However, he still is one of the special icons, that are almost so far above the rest that they don't even have enough space to fit in the limited dimensions of time and life.
The good news is that his music will always live forever in our hearts.
Rest in Paradise, Tom Petty.
